Just in 2008 a big market study by the most important yoga magazine in US was published.
This study threw very interesting marketing numbers :
- The 6.9% of adults in US, about 15.7 million people, practice yoga, spending $5.7 billion a year on yoga classes and products.
- The yogis are educated people 70% with college degrees and 30% post graduated.
- Their professional incomes goes from 75,000 USD a year for the 44% and over 100,000 USD a year for a 30%.
- 40% has from 18 to 34 years old, another 40% from 35 to 54 years old and the resting 20% over that.
- Around 70% are women.
This numbers increased in 87% from the previous study 4 years behind and has increased considerably from 2008 until now.
On other studies :
- In Canada it was the 5.5%, around 1.4 million people in 2005 practicing yoga. Of the 1.4 million Canadians, the fastest growing segment is the 18-34 age group, which increased by a remarkable 25.7% in one year.
- In the US alone, the number of facilities offering yoga went up from 31% in 1996 to 85% in 2002.
- According to sociologist Paul Ray's estimates, the number of people practicing yoga alone in the United States was at least 28 million in 2003. Paul Ray is a member of the Board of Directors of Gaiam, a large wellness industry conglomerate.
- The market for yoga in particular has grown tremendously, as it is estimated that Americans now spend $27 billion annually on yoga products and a simple search for "Yoga" books on Amazon.com turns up 18,700 results.
This numbers comes just from the US and Canada, but remember Yoga is a global phenomenon and its growing community is everywhere in the world.
